Q: How much can a completely new kitchen cost a homeowner?

A: Start with the “5 - 10% rule”. Use between 5 and 10% of the value of your home to determine what a completely new kitchen could cost. Keep in mind a full turn-key remodel involves everything from flooring to appliances and lighting in addition to cabinets and counters. You can spend more or less but typically 5 - 10% is a good place to start.

Q: What is the first thing homeowners should ask themselves in terms of budget when determining how to update their kitchen cabinets?

A: The homeowner really needs to determine what the goal or reason is of updating their cabinets. A good example would be a goal of updating cabinets to help sell a house. New kitchen cabinets and countertops can have a positive impact on the purchase price of a home and its time on the market. A cosmetic update by simply removing and replacing the cabinets and countertops with the same basic floorplan will generally cost far less than a full floor-to-ceiling remodel. The answer to the question will assist the homeowner in determining a budget for the project. If the homeowner plans to stay in the home for a number of years they may want to consider a full scale remodel with all the bells and whistles to create the kitchen of their dreams.
